  • Vegetable oil: Your favorite healthy vegetable oil for cooking works. Just try to choose one with a neutral flavor.
  • Yellow onion: Perfect for cooking but you can also use white onions or red onions.
  • Garlic and ginger: These aromatics provide the best flavor when you use fresh. Dry or powdered simply doesn’t provide the same taste to the dish.

How To Make Yellow Dal

  • 1) Heat the oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. When the oil is hot, add the chopped onions and saute until the onions become tender and translucent. 
  • 2) Next add the garlic, ginger, and spices and cook briefly for about 30 seconds. Stirring frequently so nothing burns.
  • 3) Add the lentils and broth to the pan. Cover with a lid, reduce the heat and cook until the lentils are soft, about 30 minutes. While the dish is cooking, stirring frequently.
  • 4) Serve yellow lentil dal over rice with a sprinkle of chopped cilantro.

  • 3 Tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion diced
  • 9 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 Tablespoon of grated fresh ginger
  • ½ Tablespoon of coriander
  • ½ Tablespoon of cumin
  • 2 teaspoons of turmeric
  • 1 ½ cups of yellow lentils
  • 4 cups of veggie broth
  • Cooked rice, for serving optional
  • Cilantro for garnish optional

    I love this simple recipe. I sometimes add a small amount of tomato product (e.g., paste, sauce, or once, V8), or blend in a bag of frozen butternut squash for an added vegetable in the base.

    1. Hi! You can buy veggie broth from the store or you can make your own by using a vegan bouillon cube and mix it with water 🙂

    I love Daal is definitely a comfort meal for me! I love to add curry chickpeas on the side with rice. Interesting to see a different way of making it, compared to how I learned. Love to try out this variation.
